Rin
A red-haired slum orphan of Scarlet City, born meridian-defective and for that reason the perfect vessel for the Blaze Tempering — unaware that a Primordial God has chosen his trajectory.
Rin is the protagonist of Blaze and the bearer of the rare destiny glimpsed in the world's prologue. A red-haired former slum orphan of Scarlet City, he was born meridian-defective — "a bucket with no bottom," in the sects' phrase — a flaw that closes the standard road of cultivation but makes him the ideal vessel for a hidden one.
A bucket with no bottom cannot hold water. But it can hold fire, if the fire is meant to burn straight through.
Origin and history
Rin grew up in the Slums on the eastern flank of Scarlet City, beyond a dry, bone-littered moat. Illiterate at first and slowly learning his letters, he was a thief before he was a cultivator. An early heist and the blinding of a young master set his broken legs and his flight in motion; swept over a waterfall, he found in the cave below the pearl that ignited his road. Months among a bandit crew gave him the nearest thing to a family he has known, until a massacre scattered it. He is patient and cold under pressure, and he carries a ledger of revenge debts he means to collect.
Powers
Rin walks the Blaze Tempering, the secret body-cultivation road of Blaze. It does not store qi in the dantian but consumes it, igniting it through an [Igniting Sigil] at the solar plexus and burning impurities out through the skin as slag. Each of its forty layers, spread across seven Condensations, doubles his raw strength, density, and durability. Its defining virtue is concealment: to any standard test Rin reads as an ordinary mortal with disconnected meridians, invisible by design. The first layers were taught to him by the wisp of a dying master; the road itself is inherited, not invented.
Relationships
- Whiteflame — the hunted body-cultivation master who scattered his dying soul into a hundred blood-drops across the Loom. One drop seeded Rin's road; his wisp taught the first layers and left a revenge debt as the price of inheritance.
- Violet — a scout and knife-thrower of the bandit crew, Rin's mentor and love interest, who vanished after the massacre and left a letter he could not yet read, pointing to a place called Sisma.
- Skolar — the Primordial God who, from a veiled avatar on the Dead Mountains, watches Rin's karma trajectory because it mirrors his own. Rin has never met him and does not know he exists. (See the Spine.)
- Barza — a Foundation Forging Sky Sect enforcer who slaughtered the bandit crew as a casual contract, and a primary target of Rin's revenge; he does not recognise Rin as the survivor.
Open hooks
Rin's climb toward Void Stepping — the fifth of the nine realms, and the rung at which he himself could step between stitches of the Loom; whether he ever reads Violet's letter or reaches Sisma; when, and whether, he learns that a god has been watching him since before his birth.
Theories & resonances
That Rin's road descends from a master who scattered himself into a hundred blood-drops echoes other dying high-realm beings said to seed lower stitches with themselves — a resonance the wiki tracks as the scattered-master thread. Whether such seeding is a way to cheat the severance, or to plant inheritors, is left open.
