The Ten Primordial Daos

The ten fundamental laws from which every lesser Dao descends — two polarities, four Daos of Order, four of Chaos — and the fusion of all ten that makes a Primordial God.

The Ten Primordial Daos are the fundamental laws of the Loom, the roots from which every smaller Dao descends. A cultivator who masters even one has stepped into godhood on the upper rungs of the ladder; a being who fuses all ten becomes a Primordial God and is severed from every world at once.

The two polarities

Above the ten stand two opposed principles that order them:

The eight

Beneath the polarities lie eight primordial Daos, four to each side.

Every lesser Dao a cultivator might walk — Sword, Healing, Lightning, Deception, and the countless rest — is a child of these ten. A road that looks wholly its own is, traced to its root, a branch of one primordial law or a braid of several.

Ten laws hold the whole weave. Every technique a mortal ever learned is a grandchild of one of them.

Mastery and fusion

On the seventh rung, Divine Seed, a cultivator masters at least one Dao. Godhood on the eighth rung, Dao Divinity, is scaled to how many are held. The ninth and final rung is reached only when all ten fuse into a single being — the act that makes a Primordial God and, in the same instant, exacts the severance that casts them out of their home universe.

A road built on a child Dao

Skolar, the wiki's one confirmed climber of the full ladder, began on two lesser roads: the Dao of Deception, a child of Chaos that turns others' belief in falsehoods into cultivational currency, and the Dao of Spacetime, braided from the Order-Daos of Time and Space. That a road rooted in deceit could climb toward Order at all is one of the Spine's standing puzzles.

Theories & resonances

The elemental "gates" of other worlds — Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, combined into "confluences" — name the four Daos of Chaos almost exactly, though their cultivators have never heard the word Dao. Whether such systems are the primordial laws seen through a local lens, or an unrelated resonance, the wiki may theorise but not conclude.

Open hooks

Whether any Dao stands outside the ten, unclaimed by either polarity; how the Daos of Life and Death sit under Order rather than opposed as their own pair; and what it does to a mind to hold all ten primordial laws at once, alone, above the Loom.
