The Spectral Void Entity bound to Ghor since his first death — the unseen source of all his powers, never shown directly, and by her own hint not the only one of her kind.

Vael is the Spectral Void Entity bound to Ghor since his death at fourteen, and the source of every power he has — the void-resurrection that carries his pattern from body to body, the Hoard, the discipline. She is the hidden engine of the Engine.

Never shown directly

A strict rule governs Vael: she is never seen or heard by the reader. Everything about her arrives only through Ghor's paraphrase — his report of what she said, meant, or did. She is quirky and funny in inhuman ways, alien in her sense of time, and Ghor's account is the sole window onto her. This wiki honours the same discipline: it may relay what Ghor reports, but it must not describe Vael as if witnessed.

She laughed — or the nearest thing she has to a laugh, which I only feel and never hear.

What she can do

Through Vael, a dead pattern is pulled through the Void and reseeded on a biocompatible world by the Planet Rule; through her, Ghor built over centuries his absolute bodily control and the berserker organ called the Bell; through her, the Hoard holds his keepsakes undecayed across millennia. She grants; he wields. The powers are not his by nature — they are the shape of their long bargain.

Not the only one

By Ghor's account, Vael is not the only one of her kind. He has felt others at a distance across his lives — and once, at their nearness, felt her flinch. What frightens a void entity is one of the Engine's deepest unanswered questions, and the wiki must not answer it.

Theories & resonances

Vael invites the Loom's void-entity thread: a theory that void-touched beings are agents — or parasites, or weavers — of the between-place, kin perhaps to what a Primordial God becomes after severance, or to the entity that forges champions in a pocket-universe tavern, or to the Grimoire that binds a company of soldiers. All of this is resonance, offered as theory and never as fact.
