Universe: The Charlatan
A xianxia world of sects, noble families, and a celestial bureaucracy of reincarnation — and the mortal origin of the Primordial God Skolar.
The Charlatan is a xianxia trickster universe and the low end of the Spine — the mortal origin, or an early incarnation, of the being who eventually climbs all nine realms to float above the Loom as the Primordial God Skolar. (That crossover is confirmed canon.)
The world
A cultivation world of sects, noble families, and a kingdom at war, its ladder running from Qi Condensation up through Foundation, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, and Hegemon. Above the mortal world sits a celestial bureaucracy — the Judges, or Courts of Reincarnation — that weighs the souls of the dead and reseeds them into new lives. To its inhabitants this is simply how death works; they do not suspect it is one of the ways a soul crosses between stitches of the Loom.
He was sealed twice by a Judge of Reincarnation, and reborn a prodigy — and he remembered every word of both his lives.
Power systems
The world's cultivation runs on the standard qi-gathering ladder, but its protagonist walks two lesser roads that would carry him far higher:
- The Dao of Deception — a child of Chaos (see The Ten Primordial Daos) that turns others' belief in falsehoods into cultivational currency, shifts tribulations onto enemies, and layers "truth veils" over what is real.
- The Dao of Spacetime — braided from the Order-Daos of Time and Space; the root of spatial storage items, teleportation tokens, and the finest thievery and escape in the world.
Key characters
- Skolar — an old charlatan guru whose botched enlightenment detonated his soul at seventy. His pattern, as strong as a mid-stage Hegemon's, was hauled before a Judge, sealed with two soul-seals, and reincarnated into a respectable family — yet he kept all his memories and Dao knowledge, and rebuilt his path on stealth, illusion, and fabricated techniques. - Sondras — an eighth-layer uncle and the reborn Skolar's early teacher.
- Sharah — the rival prodigy against whom the young charlatan measures his fabricated ascent.
- Akoto and Ryuru — the mother and father of the family into which the sealed soul is reborn.
Key events
An enlightenment gone wrong on a mountain detonates a seventy-year-old guru's soul; the Judges weigh and seal the pattern and reseed it into a prodigy's cradle; the reborn charlatan builds a cultivation career on illusion, theft, and invented techniques, turning others' belief into fuel while hiding the true shape of his road.
