Evergreen
A sapling that woke to sentience on the blood of a dying cultivator and climbed the ladder to Monarch — a slow, patient, morally hardening intelligence a thousand kilometres tall, feeding on a planet's magma.
Evergreen is the protagonist of Sky Pillar — a tree that woke to sentience after absorbing the blood of a dying cultivator, and rose from a roadside sapling to a Monarch over a thousand kilometres tall. It is the rarest kind of cultivator on Yunus: one that was never a person.
It grew ears of leaves to hear what the humans said, and roots of miles to drink what the world kept hidden.
Awakening
A cultivator died beside the sapling, and its blood soaked the roots; from that Evergreen woke. To learn human speech it grew ear-shaped leaves, and it discovered — slowly, without a teacher — that it possessed divine sense and could cultivate as the humans did. Rooted and silent, it watched the city near it for a long time before it ever acted.
The long climb
Evergreen's ascent is measured in decades and centuries, not duels. It rose from City Guardian — a protector the city came to depend on — to enslaver-ruler, binding the city's cultivators with soul-marks, to Monarch. Along the way distant immortals nearly destroyed it, and its decades-long regrowth from that ruin is where it learned the Dao of Life. At its height it stands over a thousand kilometres tall and feeds on the planet's magma through roots kilometres deep — a drain so vast it draws the notice of ancient Monarchs.
A hardening intelligence
What makes Evergreen singular is not its size but its patience. It is a slow, deliberate mind, and its morality hardens as it climbs: the guardian that once protected a city becomes the power that enslaves it, and it kills Dedalus — the boy who first spoke to it — when the boy's Hegemon-strength rebellion threatens the order Evergreen has built. It does not rage; it decides, and then it waits.
Theories & resonances
Waking from a dead cultivator's blood places Evergreen on the Loom's scattered-seed thread alongside the blood-drop inheritance of Blaze and the soul-ash relics of other worlds — a theory that dying high-realm beings seed lower stitches with themselves. Whether Evergreen is such a seed, or simply a plant that drank the wrong blood at the right time, is left open.
Open hooks
What grows in Evergreen's pocket inner-world once it forms one; whether a rooted, unbodied intelligence can reach the roaming upper realms at all; and how it will meet the ancient Monarch Davion's generation, converging now on the magma it drinks.
