The Hollow Lantern
A relic holding the soul-ash of a dead immortal, which lets its bearer name the flaw in any technique and drink fragments of a vanished life — power whose price is measured in the years of the bearer's own soul.
The Hollow Lantern is the relic that opens the road of Lu Chen in the Nine Vaults Continent. It holds the soul-ash of a dead immortal — the burnt-down remnant of a high-realm being — and lends its bearer both the immortal's discernment and, in pieces, the immortal's memory.
A lantern that is hollow holds no oil. This one burns the years of whoever carries it.
Mechanics
The Lantern grants two powers, coupled to a single cost.
- Appraisal — the bearer can name the flaw in any technique set against them: the seam in a sword-form, the false rung in a fabricated method, the weak point of a formation. It reads weakness the way a smith reads a bad weld.
- Memory-drip — the Lantern releases fragments of the dead immortal's past, each fragment a lesson: a technique, a truth, a warning. These are not given freely.
The price binds the two gifts together. Every draught of memory ages the bearer's soul. Power drawn through the Lantern is paid for in the years of one's own pattern, so that the relic is a teacher who charges tuition in lifespan — a golden finger with a real and rising cost.
Consequences
An artifact that trades soul-years for knowledge shapes its bearer's whole strategy: Lu Chen must climb fast enough to matter and slow enough to survive, spending the Lantern only where a lesson is worth a piece of himself. The relic's arc across the ten arcs of its universe moves it from tool to partner to teacher, and at the last to a gift its bearer chooses to release rather than drain to nothing.
