Lu Chen
A village boy branded a "dead root" who is in truth the sealed heir of the erased Lu Clan, and the bearer of the Hollow Lantern — the relic that lets him name any technique's flaw at the cost of ageing his own soul.
Lu Chen is the protagonist of the Nine Vaults Continent — a poor village boy publicly written off as a "dead root," a body that the sects judge unable to cultivate. The judgement is a lie built on an older one: he is the sealed bloodline of the Lu Clan, a house the continent's four great sects erased and then wrote out of memory.
They called the root dead so no one would dig for the seed.
Role and history
Raised by his grandfather Lu Yan in a village at the bottom of the ladder, Lu Chen inherits nothing but a name the world has taught him to be ashamed of. His path opens when the Hollow Lantern wakes to him — a relic holding the soul-ash of a dead immortal. From a falsely diagnosed cripple he climbs the continent's eight rungs, from Body Tempering toward Ascension, gathering as he goes the proof that his clan was not weak but buried.
Powers and techniques
The Lantern grants two gifts. Appraisal lets Lu Chen read the flaw in any technique set against him — the crack in a sword-form, the imbalance in a formation. Memory-drip feeds him fragments of the dead immortal's past, each one a lesson and each one a cost: every draught ages his soul, so that power bought through the relic is paid for in the years of his own pattern. It is a golden finger with a real price, not a free one.
Relationships
- The Dead Immortal — the soul-ash within the Lantern, who moves over Lu Chen's arc from tool to partner to teacher, and at the last to a gift he chooses to release.
- Lu Yan — his grandfather and only family, who dies early and leaves him the name he must redeem.
- The Four Sects — Azure Cloud Sect, Heavenfall Pavilion, Crimson Pill Hall, and Hundred Rivers Court, whose burial of the Lu Clan he exists to answer.
- The Prefecture — the shadow authority behind the seal on the sky, and the true adversary his revenge climbs toward.
Open hooks
The dead immortal's name and the faction that killed the Lu Clan; how much of his own soul Lu Chen will spend before he learns the sky is a lid; and whether the heir of an erased clan can survive being made, himself, into a thing the higher worlds want to erase.
Theories & resonances
That Lu Chen's road runs on the soul-ash of a dead high-realm being sealed inside a relic places him on the scattered-master thread — the same pattern by which Whiteflame seeds a fire-road in Blaze and a dying cultivator's blood wakes Evergreen in Sky Pillar. Whether such seeding is a way to cheat severance or to plant an inheritor is left open.
